We are an independent family run mini-hostel providing comfortable, self-catering (pet friendly) accommodation for weary travellers of all kinds. Built in the last decade of the 19th century, The Poor House, as described in the Scottish Historic Environment Records, is "a nice example of a corrugated iron longhouse". Still a corrugated iron longhouse, The Poor House now operates as a 6 berth self-catering cottage that sits alongside the A836, approximately 3 miles east of the village of Tongue in The Highlands of Scotland. You'll find us on the north coast road, approximately half way round the now world famous North Coast 500 road trip. You can also find us by searching Google Maps for The Poor House.

Centrally located alongside the A836 (NC500) our cosy iron skinned cottage is ideally situated for those looking to explore The Highlands, and particularly Sutherland, up close. The nearby Atlantic coastline is scattered with spotless sandy beaches, with the unspoiled beach at Coldbackie only 15 minutes walk away and the bays of Torrisdale, Farr and Armadale just a short drive east.
If you prefer a higher viewpoint you'll be pleased to know we are less than 30 minutes away from Ben Hope, Ben Loyal and Ben Klibreck, with many more wonderful mountains reachable within an hour. The spectacular Sandwood Bay is an easy and delightful day return excursion.
Sitting at the foot of Watch Hill (Cnoc an Fhreiceadain), made famous when Jeremy Clarkson drove a Landrover Discovery up to the top, we are perfectly situated if you are looking for an overnight pit stop while travelling the North Coast 500. We are frequently used as the first/last port of call by those cycling or walking between Lands End and John o'Groats.
Whether you're looking for a one night stopover or a base from which to explore The North Highlands in detail, let The Poor House be your rich experience on the north coast road!
